Climate Action Progress
Commit
- Publicly committed to meaningful climate action
- Commitment Policy signed by VP of Operations, Max Bottoni
Measure
- Completed and publicly disclosed annual GHG inventory
- Scope 3 Categories: 1, 4, 6, 7
- Note: All Greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions measurements are aligned with the GHG Protocol and ISO 14064-1 best practices.
Plan
- Strategic Shipping:
- Continue to develop and enact a comprehensive, sustainable plan by finding route efficiencies and prioritizing lower-emission shipping where possible
- Use ocean freight (the lowest emissions shipping method) exclusively for large shipments
- Engage clients with shipping decisions to encourage low-emission shipping methods
- Use regional storage to reduce the shipping of buoys
- Use remote support for certain activities instead of in-person
- Build out regional service centers to reduce shipments
- Buoys:
- Explore alternative technologies for battery storage, including life cycle impact and repurposing materials where applicable
- Fuel:
- Develop a corporate zero-emissions vehicle policy
- Replace the existing propane forklift with an electric model
- Electricity:
- Improve HVAC in areas not on the central system
- Replace warehouse radiant heaters with heat pumps
- Install High Volume Low Speed Fans in the warehouse
- Replace remaining light fixtures with LED bulbs
- Water:
- Ensure all toilets are low-flow (3-6L per flush)
- Waste:
- Start weekly waste tracking
- Ensure waste is disposed of in proper collection bins by staff
- Use only refillable soaps and cleaning supplies in the office
- Remove single-use coffee brewers
- Replace paper coffee filters with reusable mesh basket filters
- Set all printers to double-sided and reuse scrap paper
- Business travel:
- Establish a company travel policy, with the goal to hold total flights to the 2022 baseline level
- Stay in eco-hotels when accommodation is required
- Staff Commuting:
- Run an employee low-carbon commuting challenge
- Create an employee carpool program
- Advocate for improved transit services to reduce personal vehicle use
- Service Vessels:
- Ensure vessel right sizing
- Hire vessels equipped to use alternative fuels
Implement
- Fuel use: larger buoys use battery storage charged by renewable energy; smaller buoys have batteries recharged by solar panels
- Waste: Hull materials are repurposed to extend their life, and AXYS recycles mooring chains and reuse materials as much as possible
- Travel: The company has implemented an “only necessary” travel policy
- Commuting: WFH opportunities are offered for staff to reduce commuting emissions
- Shipping: Activity was reduced by establishing regional hubs. Stock-counting inventories are conducted regularly to reduce frequent supply shipping and increase efficiencies. Bulk shipments are used instead of piecemeal shipments, and alternative shipping methods are prioritized over air shipments.
- Fuel: An electric pallet jack was purchased to reduce forklift use.
- Electricity: Occupancy sensors were installed for bathroom lights, and heat pumps are used for the HVAC in the office and warehouse
- Water: Bathroom faucets were replaced with low-flow fixtures, and the kitchenette aerators were replaced. The cooling/testing system for buoys was discontinued due to unnecessary water use.
- Waste: The office has comprehensive sorting into 8+ waste streams, and signage is used to reduce cross-contamination of waste streams.
