Plan
- Exploring fleet electrification for vehicles that are used on site.
- Prioritizing sustainable travel practices (public transit, carpool, electric vehicles) and purchasing offsets for unavoidable flights.
- Building staff knowledge base on current sustainability initiatives, decarbonization, and regenerative tourism topics, through a micro-learning session with Synergy at the start of the summer season. This empowers staff to educate guests on sustainability during their tours.
- Setting sustainability goals for 2030 and beyond with staff and leadership input.
Implement
- Powering the cabin primarily by solar energy produced on site.
- Achieving a diversion rate of 77% indicates strong adherence to good waste management practices and proper sorting.
- Closely tracking fuel use in company vehicles to ensure proper emissions measurement & identify areas for trip efficiencies.
- Aligning with United Nations principles of ecotourism and using the Natural Step Framework as a business guideline.
- Using the “Care Instructions” (Take, Make, Break, Meet) framework to provide environmental education to guests.
Carbon Offsets Purchased: To address its emissions, Ziptrek has invested in high-quality carbon offset projects that support both climate action and community development:
- Location: British Columbia, Canada
- Project type: Reduction and avoidance
- This project protects millions of hectares of old-growth rainforest, reduces carbon emissions, and supports Indigenous-led stewardship. Proceeds from carbon credits fund conservation and community development in local First Nations.
- Great Bear Rainforest Project: 126 tonnes
Lead & Influence
- Ziptrek is committing a minimum of 1% of its annual revenue to supporting environmental stewardship, community wellbeing, and cultural preservation. Through financial contributions, in-kind donations, and paid volunteer time, Ziptrek invests in the communities and ecosystems that make guests experiences possible.
- Donations may support organizations and initiatives in the following areas:
- Environmental conservation and climate action
- Indigenous cultural preservation and education
- Social services and community wellbeing
- Youth, education, and outdoor recreation access
- Local cultural, charitable, and community events
- Appropriate organizations, fundraisers, and events that cascade regionally and beyond
